Mike Said... Tina O'Connell. Limerick City Gallery of Art 2004

Context

"Over the last five years Tina O'Connell has been reworking the traditions of sculpture. From a formal starting point in the auspicious movements of the modernist tradition, her work re-defines a contemporary relationship with the object. Our understanding and experiences of the object, our expectations of solid material form, the criteria for selection of the object, our personal physical memory, and the possibility for sculpture as spectacle itself, have all been explored in depth and with great" - Mike Fitzpatrick

Part of a major exhibition, this piece evolved throughout the duration of the exhibiton. The opening statement "MIKE SAID " had a letter added each day throughout the exhibition until it slowly revealed the entire sentence. "MIKE SAID WHATEVER YOU DO, DONT TOUCH MY CONCRETE FLOOR."

Part provocation, time based work and intervention, this work labors on a simple joke, but is more than a one liner, referring to the context of making and the situated nature of art production in the museum which is subject to informal controls and the relationship of the curator and artist. The work relates to other projects in which the relationship of text as a sign or signifier is also subject to material readings through formal and coneptual engagments with a specific site. Curated by Mike Fitzpatrick.
